Manufacturing Capabilities

Phillystran specializes in producing custom designed strength members for a broad range of applications. Over 50% of the products supplied by Phillystran are designed to specific and exacting customer requirements. Phillystran features a complete range of custom manufacturing capabilities to meet your needs including:

General Capabilities

• Long continuous lengths of stranded or braided ropes up to 8 inches in diameter and over 3 million lbs. RBS
• Thermoplastic extruded jacketing up to 4 inches in diameter
• Assembly fabrication: All of Phillystran's products are sold with any of the end terminations listed below factory installed and assembled to the customer's length specifications.

Rope Construction

Phillystran pioneered the use of wire rope constructions for high tenacity fiber ropes. This construction offers the best strength-to-diameter ratio along with excellent bending fatigue. In addition to stranded ropes, Phillystran manufactures braided, twisted, and parallel ropes and strength members. By ranking the rope's performance criteria in careful order, a rope construction is selected:

• Stranded Wire-Lay: 1x7, 1x19, 1x36, 7x19, 19x7, 4x36 and 36 strand torque balanced ropes
• Braided: 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48 strand variations
• Parallel
• Twisted
• Roved
• Fiber Impregnation, coating, waxing and special packaging

Jacketing

Many applications require the rope to be furnished with a protective outer jacket. The jacket selection is based upon the same ranking of performance criteria as referenced in the rope construction section:

• Braided: Polyester, Nylon, aramid or blends of yarns
• Thermoplastic Extrusion: Polyurethane, polyethylene, nylon, polyester, TPR, PP, etc.
• Coated: Pigmented resin coatings, coatings in combination with braided jackets

End Terminations

Rope end termination selection is as important as rope construction and jacketing. For this reason, Phillystran has developed a wide range of end termination techniques each designed for specific applications:

• Hand Splices: Phillylock, Locktuck and Sailmakers
• Resin Potted: A20SB Socketfast Blue potting compound with standard spelter sockets or special Corona Sockets
• Crimped Eye: using copper or aluminum figure 8 sleeves
• Spike fittings
• Wire formed grips by PLP

Testing

Phillystran has a wide range of in-house testing capabilities. Incoming raw materials and rope components are tested on a 24,000 lb. tensile tester. Larger tensile test machines test ropes up to 240 ft. long, 300,000 lb. RBS. Phillystran also utilizes a bend-over-sheave (BOS) machine. These machines enable Phillystran to offer testing services to customers as well as for its own QC purposes. Standard testing includes tests for tensile strength, elongation, modulus, stress relaxation, creep, tension-tension, and bending life, both wet and dry.
