PROCEDURE FOR NICOPRESS® TERMINATION - previous page |

|
GENERAL:
This procedure covers the proper method of terminating Phillystran® cables with Nicopress copper oval sleeves. This termination method is only recommended for static applications with ropes 1/2" or below. NICOPRESS SLEEVE SELECTION:
The proper sleeve size should be matched to the cable to provide a snug fit which can be easily assembled. Sleeves that are too large or too small will result in an unsatisfactory termination.
APPARATUS AND MATERIALS:
- Four Nicopress copper oval sleeves per end termination, and the corresponding crimping tool – either hand or hydraulic
- Sharp knife or cable cutters
- Heavy duty rope thimble
WORKMANSHIP:
A clean work area and careful workmanship are necessary for proper end fitting terminations.
PROCEDURE:
- Slide the four sleeves onto the cable.
Note: Do not use any lubrication.
- Bend the cable around the heavy duty thimble.
- Complete the loop, keeping the cable within the thimble groove.
- Slide the cable end back through the first sleeve.
- Complete this operation with the remaining sleeves, leaving enough tail beyond the sleeves to allow for sleeve expansion. Figure 1
- Crimp the sleeves perpendicular to the sleeves' axis using the following location sequence; sleeve nearest thimble – crimp first the middle, then top, then bottom of the sleeve. All other sleeves proceeding downward – crimp first the top, then middle, then bottom. Leave a space between sleeves equal to 1/2 the sleeve length.
- Properly pressed nicopress termination: note that the side creases of the individual nicopresses are in line. Also, the termination is on the same asix as the thimble and does not curve away. Figure 2
- OPTIONAL: Using Polyethylene High Voltage Tape (3/4 inch x 0.030 inch x 30 feet), cover the nicopress termination with four layers of tape, stretching tape 100% as it is being applied. The taped area should cover from one inch above the first nicopress, to one inch past the last nicopress. Fasten the end of the Polyethylene Tape with a black tie wrap.
NOTE: End termination efficiency will vary with rope diameter, construction and jacket type. Consult factory for details before implementing this procedure.

CAUTION: Break Strength: The breaking strength of a rope is the load at which a new rope will break when tested under laboratory conditions. Break strength should not be mistaken for safe working load. Safe Working Load: Because of the wide range of rope use, rope condition and the degree of risk of life or property, it is not possible to make a blanket recommendation for safe working load. It is ultimately dependent on the rope user to determine what percentage of break strength is their own safe working load. Wear: Ropes wear out with use; the more severe the usage, the greater the wear. It is often not possible to detect wear on a rope by visible signs alone. Therefore, it is recommended that the rope user determine a retirement criteria for ropes in their application. For assistance in developing safe working load and retirement criteria for each application please call or write Phillystran, Inc.
